Data & Tracking · Van and heavy truck rental

Redesign: whatever you do, don't copy the old GTM

How a tracking plan written before launch avoids carrying over a GTM container cluttered with useless triggers.

The client's starting goal

Van and heavy truck rental company serving professionals, in the middle of rebuilding its site on Drupal Commerce, with a quote funnel built like a shopping cart. The old GTM container had grown without a plan: 73 triggers, 53 of which no longer served any purpose. Taking it over as is meant carrying over the mess and risking broken measurement on launch day.

Key actions

We audited the existing setup, explored the staging site page by page, then wrote the tracking plan and the dataLayer specification before launch.

  1. Audit of the existing setup: tags, triggers, conversions, consent
  2. Staging explored page by page: 305 pages and 25 quote journeys
  3. Tracking plan v1.0 in 9 tabs
  4. dataLayer specification delivered to the developers, testable on staging

The impact

The tracking plan is approved before launch: 13 reliable events are kept, the rest is rebuilt cleanly through the dataLayer.

The developers have a specification they can test themselves on staging, before launch.
